Martin Luther King Jr. Park Installation
Winter Haven, FL
Art direction, graphic design, armature design, copywriting
This project was commissioned by the City of Winter Haven as they were nearing completion of large-scale renovations to the historic Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Working alongside city staff and the main contractor, Whitehead Construction, this installation was designed to greet visitors at the park’s main point of entry.
The two-panel installation includes a brief biography of Martin Luther King, Jr, acknowledgments of the achievements of notable black local figures, and a history of the park and the surrounding area.
The curves and waveforms that dominate the design are meant to complement the park’s newly-installed walking paths. The stretched Z shape of the armature was devised to create the largest possible surface area for text while limiting the overall height of the installation.
The above images give an abridged overlook of the stages of the design process.
