This installation was created as the centerpiece of my thesis project during the final semester of my BFA program. It was displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Tallahassee in May 2019.
Artist’s Statement:
In September of last year, SpaceX, the aerospace manufacturer and launch service provider, announced its plan to send a private citizen on a first-of-its-kind journey around the moon.
As I read past the headlines, I became unhinged.
This private citizen, Yusaka Maezawa, made his billions as a fashion guru. An avid curator and art collector, Maezawa has announced very specific plans for this trip. Not only is he paying his own way, but he’s prepared to finance the cosmic travels of eight more. This will be the tycoon’s ultimate curatorial project.
He says those eight people will be artists.
Surely, whoever is chosen will already be very highly regarded. Surely, a team has already compiled a list of prospective candidates. Surely, the selection process will be equally as rigorous as that for real astronauts. That said, this news has stirred (well, shaken) me, an otherwise rational and realistic person.
I will be going to the moon. If not on Musk’s rocket, then on my own.
